- Tide refers to the vertical movement of water that is created by the interaction between Earth, Sun and The moon.
- the difference in height between low and high tide for a given tide cycle is called Tide range.
- . In San Francisco area, we have two high tides and two low tides within every 24-hour day.
- Tidal current is the horizontal movement of water. Tidal currents, just like tides, change depending on the different phases of the moon. When there is full moon or when it is at new phase, tidal current velocities are strong and are called “spring currents.” During first or third quarter tidal current velocities are weak and they are called “neap currents.”
- Types of tidal currents are as follows: For a brief period of time there is no current in any direction. This is called Slack; If the current is coming in towards land it is called flood. In our case movement of water from ocean to Bay is flood. If the current is going out it is called ebb. In our case flow of water from Bay to the ocean is ebb.
- The currents in the Bay follow a cycle like this: before flood is slack; Then comes max flood; before ebb is slack then comes max ebb. before flood slack again.
Most people who do pier fishing in and around SF Bay prefer fishing close to high tide. They usually start about 2-3 hours before high tide and finish about an hour or so after high tide.

Fishing with me!
Fishing is one of my favorite activity. I do pier fishing around San Francisco Bay. During my training for "Paddling From Europe To Asia" I am hoping to get into kayak fishing as well.I want my website, www.theblindcaptain.com to be a platform where blind and sighted fisherman can connect and go fishing together.
If you are a blind fisherman looking for a sighted fishing buddy or if you are a sighted fishing enthusiast who wants to volunteer please contact me at ahmet@theblindcaptain.com.
